Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King Review

Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King is a 2023 Japanese anime film based on the Black Clover manga series by Yūki Tabata. It was directed by Ayataka Tanemura and produced by Studio Pierrot. The film was released in Japanese theaters and on Netflix internationally on June 16, 2023.

The film follows Asta and Yuno, two orphans who dream of becoming the Wizard King, the most powerful mage in the Clover Kingdom. When a group of revived Wizard Kings from the past threatens to destroy the kingdom, Asta and Yuno must team up with their friends to stop them.

The film features a returning cast from the television series and also features new characters, including Conrad Leto, the resurrected Wizard King who is leading the group of revived Wizard Kings. Like any great villain, Conrad thinks he is the good guy and is doing the right thing.

Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King has received positive reviews from critics, with praise for the animation, action, and voice acting. The film has also been a commercial success, grossing over $100 million worldwide.

Here are some of the things you can expect from the movie:

  • It was released in Japan in theaters, obviously in Japanese. However, on Netflix you will be stuck with the dub. I’m not saying the dub voice actors aren’t great. I am just saying that if you are used to watching it in Japanese the characters will sound different. Also, everytime Captain Yami speaks you will wonder if Zoro got lost again and wondered into the Clover Kingdom.
  • Epic action sequences: The film is full of exciting and visually stunning action sequences, featuring some of the most powerful mages in the Clover Kingdom. Honestly, this film comes out of the gate with epic fight scenes and continues like this until the end of the movie.
  • Heartwarming friendships: The film is also full of heartwarming moments of friendship and camaraderie, as Asta and Yuno team up with their friends to save the kingdom. The Asta/Yuno fistbump is the height of anime bromance and something that always gets to me when watching Black Clover.
  • A thrilling story: The film has a thrilling and suspenseful story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Granted, this movie is filler but if you’ve been waiting to see more Black Clover content for the past few years this will give you a fix until Black Clover returns in 2024 to finally continue the arc we were engrossed in before it abruptly stopped.

If you're a fan of the Black Clover manga or anime series, then you'll definitely want to check out the movie. It's a great addition to the series and is sure to please fans of the franchise.
